Haley Morris and Kate Henry were driving home from a late night gym session when they found themselves the middle of a weighty situation. Their usual way home was blocked due to construction, so the duo took a different and unfamiliar route on an ill lit and fog-covered road. Morris, who was driving, recalls visibility being near zero when the young women plunged without warning into the Waccamaw River.
It just so happened that D.J. Nance was fishing on a dock nearby when he heard the SUV hit the water. Nance made a spit second decision and dove into the ice cold river, swimming toward the sinking car. Determined to free the girls from their watery prison, Nance yanked open the driver’s side door and pulled Morris to safety.
“Whenever he grabbed hold of me, I just looked at Kate and she was saying, ‘Please don’t leave me. Please, please don’t leave me,’ and I said, ‘I’m not. I’m not. He’s going to get you out too I promise,” Morris said.
Nance quickly retrieved Henry and swam both girls to a nearby dock where the women couldn’t stop thanking their new friend.
“He was laying on the dock, and Haley and I were kind of like patting him and saying, ‘You saved us. You saved us,’” Henry said.
As they lay panting on the dock, Nance told the women that he “was either going to get them safely out or die trying.”
What an incredible act of bravery and heroism!
