Most of us are taught from an early age to help out our elders. Whether it’s helping an old woman take groceries to her car or brightening an old man’s day, every small act of kindness for the elderly goes a long way. While a Saddle Brook, NJ native Jim Mango was waiting in his car at a train crossing, he noticed a situation unfolding that was sure to have dire consequences.
Hunched over with two canes propping her up, and old woman who could barely walk was trying to cross the tracks as a train was barreling toward her. Mango thought the old woman would make it across in time, but suddenly, she froze and would not take another step. Throwing caution to the wind, Manjo jumped out of his car to help usher the old woman away from mortal danger.
“I’m watching and I see her going across and I’m like, ‘This isn’t feeling right,’” Mango told WABC. “I saw the train was really coming. I sprinted onto the tracks and I pulled her by the arm.She was scared, like I was trying to do something,” Mango continued. “She actually stopped because she was scared, so then I tried grabbing her arm and then really tried pulling her. She was having a lot of trouble.”
Luckily another man ran over to helped him pull her the final bit of the way.
Mango recalls that the train missed both of them by a matter of inches. The life and death situation could have taken Mango along with the older woman, but according to Mango he’d do the same thing tomorrow if he had to.
“I’m not a hero, I’m not anything. I just saw something and something needed to be done,” Mango said. “Just an ordinary Wednesday.”
Do something extraordinary for a stranger on this ordinary day. You never know when your time will come, but don’t miss the chance to improve the lives of others today.
