Alarming moment bear gatecrashes family picnic & jumps on table – but mom’s next move is incredibly smart

I think we’ve all seen strange things take place at family picnics and barbecues before. Whether it’s drunken aunts, bickering siblings or wasp stings, such events can usually be relied upon for being unpredictable and entertaining.

Entertaining, however, is likely not the word one family from Mexico would use after a recent experience at the Chipinque Ecological Park in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León.

A truly shocking video has surfaced showing the family enjoying their picnic at a table, only for a hungry black bear to burst onto the scene and slowly, methodically begin making their food his own…

I don’t have all that much experience with bears, and for that I’m grateful. They’re magnificent creatures, don’t get me wrong, but there’s something about the hair, claws, teeth, prickly attitude, size, teeth, that puts me off the idea of ever spending any amount of time around them.

That said, I usually don’t mind watching them in documentary shows or the hundreds of clips to be found on YouTube. For the most part, they’re curious animals, more than capable of getting up to the kinds of mischief that make for a good viral video these days.

One Mexican family can attest to that, as they’re run-in with a black bear at lunch time made for incredibly tense viewing.

According to reports, mom Silvia Macías and her brood were enjoying their food at the Chipinque Ecological Park when the bear appeared and decided he wanted to take what was theirs.

Making matters worse, the horrified family had no warning of the bear’s arrival, and so could do little more than sit, frozen, as the animal climbed onto their picnic table and began to devour the food they had brought with them.

Mom Silvia revealed that her son, Santiago, is afraid of animals, so she had to use some quick-thinking (and a good deal of courage, we might add) to ensure their safety.

“Santiago is very afraid of animals, a cat or a dog, any animal scares him a lot. I didn’t want him to see it and scream or run,” Silvia explained.

“I was afraid that if he got scared or screamed, (it would) scare the bear.

“I just think I’m a mother who protected her cub.”

Footage of the family’s encounter with the bear was posted to TikTok, where it since accumulated over six million views.

Thankfully, on this occasion the bear ate the food and then left without bothering anyone else.

Wow! Incredible footage, I think we can all agree. If you thought this story was interesting, check out the bulldog puppy that saved it’s “owner’s life” by chewing his toe to the bone – before hospital scans revealed the unthinkable…
