After this past weekend, there is no doubt that we are, in fact, a nation divided. President Donald Trump entered office on Friday with the lowest approval ratings of any president on record, and he has a lot of work to do to convince one half of our citizens that he is up to the job.
But, while it is every American’s right to disagree with our leaders, it is never okay to threaten or call for their assassination. Beyond being wholly inappropriate and uncivil, under certain circumstances it is even a criminal act. And one Kentucky woman is learning the hard way that her poor choice of words, and irresponsible use of social media will have far more negative effects on her life than on our president. You won’t believe what she tweeted.
We may never know if it was stupid drunk tweet or if she was serious, but one Kentucky woman is in very deep, very hot water this week after posting a call for president Donald Trump’s assassination on the social media channel.
WAVE television is reporting that Heather Lowrey of Louisville, Kentucky is in deep doo doo after posting the following tweet to her account:
“If someone was cruel enough to assassinate MLK, maybe someone will be kind enough to assassinate Trump. #bekind #trump #lovetrumpshate.”
Lowrey posted it at around 1:45 am on Tuesday, just days before Trump took the oath of office to become the United States’ 45th president.
Someone took a screenshot of her tweet, and soon it made its way from the twittersphere to her bosses, and even the US Secret Service.
Speaking with a local paper, a representative of the Secret Service said “Any time threatening communications like that are made, we always conduct an investigation.”
And soon after, Lowry was fired from her position with the Va Va Vixens, a Louisville based burlesque and variety troupe.
In a public statement, the group said “Please, know that we, at Va Va Vixens, do not condone the behavior of Heather Lowrey. She was dismissed the moment we were informed of this incident. We have a zero tolerance policy for such. It’s no secret that we are in the midst of a divided nation. With so much hate and anger in the world, our hope is to be a sanctuary that welcomes all walks of life with open arms. We do not condone hate by any party and will not partake in it. We in no way support negative behavior or malicious intent from anyone.”
Her daytime employer, the local office of a national insurance company, also found out about the ill-advised tweet and terminated her as well.
They also issued a statement on their Facebook page concerning the incident, saying “Heather Lowrey is no longer contracted with the Travis Moody Agency. The Travis Moody Agency, its agents and its staff do not share the same views, nor opinions as Heather Lowrey. We have a zero tolerance policy and would never condone this behavior.”
