For many teenage girls, going to the prom with the high school quarterback is a dream come true, but the story of Mary Lapkowicz and Ben Moser is definitely something to be considered out of the ordinary. While in the fourth grade, Ben promised Mary that he’d take her to the high school prom when the time arrived. And so it happened; Moser ended up escorting his longtime childhood friend Mary to the prom and sharing some great memories together. The fact that Mary has Down syndrome makes this heartwarming story even more special, and it definitely didn’t stop Ben from keeping his word.
He Made Her a Promise In 4th Grade That No One Thought He Would Keep..But Wait Till You See Them Now!
Ben and Mary’s fourth grade teacher, Tracey Spogli, remembers the two of them amicably interacting with each other while in school: “He watched over her constantly. If she was looking like she wasn’t having fun, he would go over and talk to her. He would pull her in to whatever activity they were doing. He just always watched out for her.” Even after seven years, Ben appears to be doing what he’s always done.
During the weeks leading up to the prom event, Lapkowicz figured that Moser had forgotten all about the promise until she received some balloons with the word prom written on them. Mary said that she was really surprised and that she’d already intended on going with some friends. Lisa Moser, Ben’s mother, posted these words on Facebook: “Today with joyful tears in my eyes and down my face I watched a promise made, seven years ago, to a beautiful girl fulfilled,”
