Megan Wilson needed to get some grocery shopping done and didn’t care that other people were trying to do the same when she loaded her cart with everything she needed then forced her way into the checkout line. The only thing that seemed to matter to her was herself, but she made a big mistake with who was in line right behind her.
Wilson likes to save herself a lot of money more than she likes to save other people time. Everyone knows that there are certain points in the day that are the busiest times to shop, but that didn’t stop Wilson some getting the items she had coupons for that she wanted to use before they expired. As she stood in line for 20 minutes at the register, thumbing through her folder to save a few cents on each thing in her cart, the man behind her ran out of patience.
“He started shouting ‘Come on, there’s other people out here. Nobody has time for this,’” Wilson told WREG, which anyone who has been in his position can certainly relate to — except the woman with the massive stash of coupons. While there is nothing wrong with saving her family money and stocking her pantry for pennies on the dollar, there’s a time and a place to do your couponing that’s considerate of other people who need to get in and out. After 20 minutes of this and a line of people behind her, the shopper said that she became a victim of this man’s wrath until the video of what she did came out.
According to KFOR, Wilson said that the irate shopper attacked her, knocking her to the ground, where she blacked out and woke up to her tipped-over cart on top of her. She added that before falling over, the two had exchanged some harsh words, claiming that her hand accidentally hit the counter and caused her to spill her drink on him, which was the final straw before he allegedly assaulted her. However, the video showed something else.
Her claim was filled with flaws when Memphis, Tennessee police released surveillance footage of the line brawl which showed the couponer intentionally throw her drink on the shopper who was upset that she was taking so long. The man left the store in a Ford F150 before anyone could question and identify him, but the footage could now lead to assault charges for Wilson as well as the frustrated man in line who reacted poorly to her tossing her drink on him.
With the craze that couponing has become and the need for it for families who rely on the savings to stock their shelves without having to use food stamps, there should be a dedicated checkout line for couponing customers to use. Just as there is an express checkout, it would be beneficial to all to have a slow line, since many people have been stuck behind someone trying to pay this way which takes far too much time when you’re in a hurry and there aren’t enough registers open. While there is no excuse for violence in this scenario, Wilson should have more consideration for others and not expect people to wait an enormous amount of time for her to do what she wants.
