Every workday, Derrick Taylor gets up in the middle of the night so he can begin his 5 mile walk to his 4 a.m. shift at UPS. It’s not easy, but he does it without complaining so he can help support his ailing mother.
Taylor has been working at the UPS center for over a year-and-a-half loading trucks. He makes $11.90 an hour and every cent goes back to helping his family, so he hasn’t been able to afford his own car.
Derrick’s co-workers were so impressed with the young man’s work ethic and dedication that they decided they wanted to do something to help him. They pooled their money together and bought Derrick a used Jeep Cherokee.
On February 22 they brought everyone together and surprised the 19-year-old with the gift.
“This is a hard-working young man,” co-worker J.D. Ward said. “He makes me emotional. This young man wants to work so bad, he walks to work from way out of town.”
“The group here, we’ve got some good news for you,” he told Derrick. “Everybody came together and you don’t have to walk no more. You’ve got your own ride.”
The hard-working teen was left stunned and so incredibly grateful to each of his co-workers who had pitched in to help.
“If I could, I would go around and thank everybody one by one,” he said. “This is really going to change a lot for me, so thank you again.”
