5 years ago, a young boy in Christchurch, New Zealand named Evan Hill was mostly known as “rabbit kid,” the name bullies would taunt him with. The cruel nickname was hurled at Evan due to Evan’s unusually large front teeth.
The buck teeth were so massive, Evan couldn’t even close his mouth all the way, but his parents couldn’t afford the dental operations necessary to correct Evan’s condition. His mother said she even “looked at probably mortgaging [their] house to pay for them.”
That’s when Evan’s story was made public, and Evan was met with an overwhelming response.
Thousands of people from both Evan’s community in Christchurch and from far across New Zealand responded with compassion. Thousands of dollars in donations poured in from complete strangers eager to help.
Evans operations totaled to around $100,000, covered entirely by donations with money left over! And– after 5 years of regular orthodontist visits– Even has finally removed his braces and is showcasing his smile.
“I don’t know where we would have been today without the generosity,” said Evan’s mother.
The leftover donations that went beyond Evan’s needs are now part of a trust for other children in need of dental work their families cannot afford.
