Kids clothing brand owner ‘can’t understand’ why mums offended by her baby grow design

A clothing brand has been criticised after making a babygrow with a slogan many have found questionable, with some mums saying it’ll make girls ‘never feel good enough’

Children’s clothing has come under fire in recent years, especially if it’s overly ‘gendered’, with criticism given to girls’ clothing boasting slogans about prettiness, and boys’ clothing telling them to ‘reach for the stars’. Thankfully, there seems to be a societal shift as many stores now stock gender-neutral clothing – but one woman has come under fire after making a babygrow with a slogan many have found questionable.

Branding the women who don’t like it as “snowflake Karen’s”, and “touchy women”, the kid’s clothing boss is wondering why people have taken offence to the design on the babygrow, saying it was a joke.

The babygrow says that the baby will get ‘a spray tan, false eyelashes, and lip filler like Mummy.’

Victoria King, who runs Vicky’s Babywear and personalised items, created the tongue-in-cheek sleepsuit for a customer and shared it on her Facebook page last month.

But as the day progressed, she noticed the post being shared and racking up more comments than usual – and was horrified to discover people were branding the outfit as “well grim.”

Initially panicked at the negative feedback, the mum-of-one considered deleting the post but rang pals who reassured her that the items wouldn’t be ‘everyone’s cup of tea’ but that she can make what she wants.

Since the drama surrounding the babygrow, she’s been inundated with requests for similar, and she says she’s ‘over the moon’.

Victoria, from Norton, Cheshire, said: “At the minute people are just so touchy about everything, you can’t say anything anymore – people just get offended.

“It’s so strange, I just don’t understand some of the comments. You don’t go to Marks and Spencer, see two blouses, don’t like one and go onto their website and say ‘this one’s disgusting’.

“I don’t understand it, unfortunately that’s the way it is.

“At the beginning, it was bothering me that people were taking it so personally. I had people saying ‘oh no I wouldn’t put this on a baby, this is disgusting’.

“I blocked quite a few because I panicked at first and thought ‘oh my god maybe I should take this off altogether’.

“It’s quite controversial but I’ve taken a lot of orders on the back of people jumping on this post.

“The good comments outweigh the bad, I’m over the moon with that and people putting orders in.”

Other slogans Victoria’s painted onto sleepsuits include ‘be honest, does my bum look big in this?’ and ‘when I grow up I’d love a moustache just like nana. Can’t wait!’

Despite having made £7 babygrows like this before, Victoria says it’s the first time people have found a problem with them.

One disgruntled social media user wrote: “Way to bring your kid up to believe her appearance is the most important thing about her and she’ll never be good enough.”

Another commented: “I don’t know what’s worse, the item itself or the fact there’s a market for it.”

One wrote: “That is well grim and I’d defo not order from somewhere that promotes this […] the thought of promoting babies growing up self-conscious doesn’t sit right with me.”

Another commented: “This is heartbreaking.”

Others praised the outfit.

One wrote: “Love it, each to their own is what I say. If we were all the same what a boring world we would live in … the world is full of Karens.”

Another commented: “Why are people so offended by this? My baby had a bib her dad got her saying ‘my mummy’s full of s*** like my nappy’. It’s just a joke guys.”
