Here’s What Too Much Tanning Ended Up Doing To This Woman (Photos)

A young mom and beauty blogger, famous for sharing salon deals, recently spoke out about her skin cancer battle.

Lisa Guthrie, a 33-year-old woman, has drawn ten of thousands of Facebook users to her “Tried and Tested” page, where she posts deals on beauty salons and products she has personally used, reports Chronicle Live.

Now, the formerly tanning-obsessed mother of two has revealed that she has spent the last few months privately battling skin cancer and hopes other can learn from her mistakes.

“I tried to keep it under wraps because I had so much going on,” she said. “I put on a brave face, but the truth was that inside I was terrified.”

As a teen, Guthrie was obsessed with tanning. When she was 16, her parents bought her a tanning bed, and she used it every night, reports the Daily Mail. While most people would use tanning beds at that time for no more than 20 minutes a day, Guthrie would often fall asleep for up to an hour.

As she grew older, she continued to sunbathe regularly, often taking naps outside in the afternoon, wearing a bikini, oil and low-SPF sunscreen.

All of that changed at a recent visit to her dermatologist. After removing a couple of irregular moles, the specialist told her she had malignant melanoma.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said, according to Chronicle Live. “I’d had moles removed in the past and there had never been any issues, so I thought this would be the same.”

Luckily, specialists caught the cancer early. After five weeks, Guthrie is cancer-free, but she will need to return for frequent check-ups to make sure the cancer does not return. Guthrie has changed her lifestyle to avoid the sun, and she says she now wants to use her influence to warn young people about the dangers of tanning.“There are a lot of young girls out there just hammering the sunbeds. I did when I was younger,” she said.

“My message to women out there is to protect and look after their skin as much as possible. There is a lot of fantastic spray tans out there, there is no need to be using sunbeds.”
