Woman Wakes Up From Coma, Then Doctor Hands Her Baby, Says It’s Her Son

Imagine waking up in a hospital bed and being told you had been in a coma for the last four months. Now imagine the doctor hands you a baby you’ve never seen before and tells you he’s your son.

Amelia Bannan doesn’t have to imagine – that’s exactly what happened to her.

Late last year, the 34-year-old policewoman from Argentina was in a car accident involving her service vehicle that left her in a coma.

She was pregnant at the time and, though she was gravely injured, her pregnancy moved along normally. Her son, Santino, was born via C-section a few hours before Christmas in perfect health.

Amelia’s sister, Norma, took care of Santino after he was born, bringing him to visit his mother every day at 6 p.m.

Earlier this year, Amelia began to move in her sleep and her family became hopeful that she would wake up from her coma. Then, a miracle.

“Last Thursday, during Holy Week, we were in her room at the clinic, and we heard someone say ‘Yes,’” Amelia’s brother, Cesar, recalled. “We approached her. It was a very moving moment.”

Shortly after Amelia woke up, Norma brought Santino in so she could meet her son. At first Amelia was confused and thought the baby was her nephew, but then her family gave her the happy news.

Slowly, Amelia began to remember what had happened and piece things together.

She still has a long way to go in her recovery, but doctors are astounded at the progress she has made.

“The doctors said that Amelia has defied all scientific logic, that her case is truly a miracle,” said Cesar, who is also a police officer.

“Amelia is young, and despite the traumatic brain injury she suffered, she is surprising us,” said neurosurgeon Marcelo Ferreira, who is treating her. “She still has a lot to give. She needs time, and everyone needs to be patient.”
